BHP Steelworks

The Broken Hill Proprietary Company established its steel manufacturing plant at Port Waratah on the Hunter River near the coastal city of Newcastle.  The works opened in 1915 and was a major contributor to the Australian and consequently the Newcastle economy.
This website has images from a 1930 published company reference book that provided engineering details of BHP's and its subsidiaries' products.
The steelworks closed in 1999 as a result of changing world economic conditions.  The manufacturing plants and all infrastructure were dismantled and the site was remediated.

Pictured above is the Main Administration Building.  This is the only building that remains on the site.
